The Arch of Septimius Severus in Leptis Magna, modern Libya.

We can only hope that this beautiful building and all those like it will stand proud and tall and safe despite whatever national unrest is happening in Libya and all places like it. That is a true thing of beauty.

Timeline of the Roman Empire. This is pretty awesome.

Yeah I absolutely can not stop looking at this. Only problem is I don’t really have a huge deal of knowledge about the evolution of the Empire beyond the 5th century. So everywhere from 500AD to 1453AD are irritating blank spots in my knowledge that must be filled! …looks like a lot more library time ahead.

Not usually too into anything Egyptian but anything unusual is worthy of being shared.

Marcus Aurelius.

myancientworld:

Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor, reigning between 161- 180AD. He married Faustina, who was actually his cousin.

At the beginning of his reign, he co-ruled with Lucius Aurelius Verus (ruling in the east) but suddenly died in 169AD.

He was well known for his stoic philosophy (quotes of his can be found on this blog), and wrote Meditations, but also waged war on the Parthian Empire and Germanic Tribes, with his reign marking the end of the Pax Romana which Emperor Augustus had established.

Nice post! I write these little sort of things up a lot and people seem to enjoy them. I usually also throw a picture in there too, always a crowd pleaser :)
